The Favor Read online

As kids, Janelle and Gabe made sure to keep their relationship, especially the romantic aspect of it, a secret. How would things have been different if they’d “come out” as a couple, both in the past and present?

Gabe’s relationship with his dad is complicated. Should Gabe have left home the way he wanted to, the way his brother Mike did? Did he make the right choice in staying to take care of Andy?

Andy and Mike have a closer relationship than Gabe does with either of them, but it’s Gabe who ends up taking care of things at home while Mike goes away. Should Mike have stayed closer? Should he have made more of an effort to return? Why didn’t he?

Gabe’s mother allows the deception about her existence to continue, with no solid explanation about why (other than perhaps her own selfishness). Was any part of her rationale reasonable? Why or why not?

The Favor presents an underlying theme of selfishness versus selflessness. Which characters do you think best exemplify those traits, and why?

Janelle is so determined to avoid making the same mistakes her dad did that she goes a little overboard with her son. Was she wrong in trying to make sure history didn’t repeat itself?

Janelle’s dad doesn’t seem to grow much throughout the story. Did her decision at the end come as a surprise, or was her choice not to allow him to be part of her life justified? Is forgiveness always the right choice?

Compare Janelle’s decision about her relationship with her father to the one Gabe has with his dad at the end of the book.
